TEH MONSTERS BY MAC MAZZIERI
by Vico Faggi

(from "Quaderni liguri di cultura", n. 2, Genoa, september 6th 1972)

The giant gloomy and lonely monsters- marked in their wrinkled skin by the imperceptible but constant conflicts of a time without memory- imprisoned in their irreparable difference- defeated by a sadness that is made mysterious by the sidereal distance of its origins- the monsters are welcomed by a landscape man has never known except through the feverish dreams of a predestinate, in a space marked by some recurring themes we'll call, in a very inaccurate way, the tree, the leaning against houses, the clouds. We are talking about Mazzieri's archetypal world.
As for Mazzieri's undeniable connections with surrealism and the disturbing muses, he doesn't merely subscribe more or less eagerly, but he takes part in them with a very original and unique creative contribution. Mazzieri gives surrealism a heritage of surprisingly prestigious forms that strike us because they are, at the same time, never seen before, authentic and logic: we mean original forms, with a clear mark of truth, organized in a necessary structure.
It's obvious that these creatures, once they are evoked, couldn't be different-fibre by fibre, vertebra by vertebra- from what they appear, from what they are, as an intrinsic cogent logic and a secret law of coherence created them. When we have got over the surprise (the dark crux of feelings their presence has raised), we can see the naturalness of these figures, of this universe.
Discovering and putting into effect the law of their creation, Mazzieri has given us the confirmation and the measure of his artistic vocation.
