WALTER MAC MAZZIERI
by Giuseppe Marchiori

(Letter to the publisher Artioli, Venice, February 15th 1974)

Dear Sir,

I didn’t forget the promise I made during the last months to come to Modena. Only my occupations, which are more and more oppressive, have prevented me from leaving Venice and coming to Modena.

In fact I traveled abroad and I went to other Italian towns. Moreover I must confess that sometimes the thick fogs of Padania made me delay my visit.

A visit that isn’t completely unselfish, especially after I saw the wonderful edition of the volume dedicated to Mazzieri, a painter, among the few in Italy, who follows the difficult route of surrealism and symbolism, exploring a secret and marvelous world. An odd guy, this Mazzieri who said: ”Freedom is living alone”. (But it would be a kind of freedom  easier than the one you’d reach living among people in the continuity of a deep social relation. However also in Mazzieri’s loneliness monsters may be born, the giant monsters of hallucination and interior conflicts. The painter is really out of common proportions).

I told you my visit won’t be unselfish, because having noticed the beauty of the book, I had the idea of a plan…..

At the beginning of the milder season, without fog, I expect to come to Modena. I’ll call you some days before.

Thank you for the kind present.

Best regards.

Yours

Giuseppe Marchiori
